Missing 78-year-old found dead near Allenspark after multi-day search

DENVER (KDVR) — A man was found dead near Allenspark after a multi-day search.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said they received an initial call on Tuesday afternoon from a family member asking for a welfare check on a 78-year-old man who lived near Allenspark. According to the family member, the man had not been heard from since Jan. 16, which they said was unusual.

On Tuesday, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to the man’s home on Big Owl Road to conduct a welfare check, but the man was not home. Deputies said he appeared to have left on foot.

Deputies initiated an initial search but were unable to locate the man.

The next morning, on Wednesday, 15 search and rescue personnel and volunteers went out to expand the search area.

Those living in the area may have received an Everbridge notification, asking them to be on the lookout for the man.

After another day of searching, the sheriff’s office said the missing man was not found.

The search continued on Thursday, with 35 search and rescue personnel.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said a man matching the missing man’s description was found dead Thursday at 11:40 a.m., approximately a half mile away from the missing man’s home.

The sheriff’s office said he was found by members of the Arapahoe Rescue Patrol — a volunteer organization composed of high school students.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity and cause of death at a later date.
