GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The city of Glens Falls has completed nearly all of its Downtown Revitalization Initiative projects, according to Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday. She made the announcement during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the South Street Market & Event Center.
The Glens Falls Downtown Revitalization Initiative has been in the works since 2017, when the city received a nearly $10 million grant from the state. Through the initiative, the city hoped to expand its infrastructure and resources and promote Glens Falls as an arts, culture and entertainment destination.
“Today, the South and Elm neighborhood is being reborn before our eyes, and the new Market & Event Center is a true game changer for Glens Falls, bringing an event venue to South Street, unlocking possibilities downtown to help support jobs and economic development,” said Glens Falls Mayor Williams Collins.
Now, with the mixed-use Market & Event Center unveiled, Glens Falls can reportedly mark a majority of its revitalization projects complete, totaling over $48 million in investment. The city has also built four public art installations as part of the Arts District & Public Arts Trail, redeveloped the SUNY Adirondack Culinary School and constructed a pocket park with recreation space, cafe seating and green infrastructure.
“From small business growth to arts and culture, and from infrastructure improvements to new housing and educational opportunities, the Glens Falls community is thriving — and showing the entire state what smart, strategic investment can do,” Hochul said.
The Event & Market Center will be the home of the Glens Falls Farmers Market starting June 7. The final development phase of the Market and Event Center project is expected to wrap up this summer with the renovation of three mixed-use buildings for ancillary commercial and restaurant space.
