Edinburgh police HQ still lies unused for years despite being worth millions

AN EDINBURGH police HQ originally slated to be sold off and redeveloped for housing still lies empty years later.

The site, owned by Police Scotland, was scheduled for redevelopment with an announcement in 2021 stating it would be turned into flats.

The 14-acre site at Crew Road was identified as a site for mixed use accommodation in the City Plan 2030.

Proposals to sell the property to the city council for development seem to have stalled however, with locals questioning why plans were not followed through.

With the city in need of both housing and cash locals have asked why the development of the valuable 14 acres has not gone ahead.

The site was estimated to be able to support the development of hundreds of much-needed homes for residents.

The site opened in 1974 for use as the Police Scotland HQ in Edinburgh and in 2024 was fully vacated by officers.

It lies empty awaiting action on the now three-year-old plans to redevelop it, but it was revealed in 2023 that the current building was built with collapse-prone concrete.

If redevelopment of the site were to go ahead the building would be razed to make way for the planned housing.
