The Flower and Flames festival started at Monk Bar, before parading through Goodramgate to King’s Square.
Made up of stilt walkers, Morris dancers, fire breathers and a dragon, Lord Mayor of York Cllr Martin Rowley welcomed the start of the festival in a speech.
He said: “We are here in the historic heart of Goodramgate, to open this splendid celebration known as the Flower and Flame festival.

“As Lord Mayor of York it is my distinct pleasure and honour to welcome each and all who pass by this magnificent event.
“Today we celebrate not only the beauty of our city and the warmth of our community spirit. But also the vital role that our small businesses play in the tapestry of our great city.
“These local enterprises are the life blood of York, infuse our streets with unique character, creativity and charm. Their dedication and passion enrich our daily lives and ensure that York remains a thriving and vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.”

Once the procession reached King’s Square, the Raven Morris dancers engaged in their steampunk interpretation of the traditional dance.
The day featured a decoration competition for the businesses of Goodramgate, with flowers and flames adorning some shop fronts.
From King’s Square, they returned to College Green – outside York Minster – where further performances and street painting took place. The civic party went on to judge the decoration competition in Goodramgate.

Cllr Rowley added: “Let us revel in the vibrant flowers that adorn the shop fronts, and the dazzling flowers that light up the streets.
“Let us support and honour the hardworking artisans, merchants, and visionaries who contribute so much to our beloved city with joyous heart and festive spirit.”
The official midsummer date in the United Kingdom is June 24. However, organisers and the traders of Goodramgate chose to commemorate the occasion on Sunday, June 15, to bring the day in-line with Father’s Day.
