Otter Chaos – Cheeky otter ransacks Scots family cupboards in hilarious video
A cheeky otter ransacked a family’s kitchen cupboards after following the scent of a fresh catch at sea.
Mum Donna Mouat, 36, lives in South Nesting on Shetland with fisherman husband Ryan, 42, and their two kids. She was cooking dinner when she noticed the creature searching for food outside.
Their son and daughter, Geordie, 4, and Vaila, 6, went outside to catch a glimpse of the animal – only for the cheeky otter to run through the open front door of their home.
The chaos was captured on video by dad Ryan as the creature invaded their home.
“It was definitely a moment of ‘Oh, oh!'”, Donna said. “You couldn’t make it up!
“My husband is a fisherman, so he’d brought some home with him and there was some old fish lying around in his equipment. It must have come to hunt for some food!
“It all just happened so quickly!”
The viral video, which has had over 25,000 views on TikTok, starts off with the family capturing the otter playing around outside before it quickly runs up the front steps and through the door on February 21.
After running through the kitchen, the otter hid in a storage room, but when Ryan tried to coax the animal out, it ran through his legs and back into the kitchen.
The otter then hopped up on a table and started causing chaos as it swung off a floor lamp and ran across the kitchen counters, knocking over crockery.
Not knowing where to go, it then managed to jump into a cupboard, pulling the contents out. The otter then ran across the top of the cupboards before working out its escape route out of the property.
“We know otters can be quite vicious, and we worried it could bite one of us, so we thought the kids should stay out of the way,” Donna explained.
“I kept out of the road with them while Ryan went in after it and I caught the shock of it coming back out.
“It was just so funny watching Ryan trying to get it out that I had to put it online.
“I’m amazed that nothing was broken with all the mess it caused! But I did have to chuck the tea out after all that.
“Shetland is a small place so every time we go out anywhere people are coming up to us saying, ‘Are you that family with the otter in your kitchen?’
“Even my mum is getting recognised!”
Donna added: “We’ve never seen the otter again, but I’m not surprised because we gave it a right shock, probably.”
An SSPCA spokesperson said: “You should contact our helpline for advice if you come across an otter out of its natural habitat. Always keep a safe distance as they can be aggressive.”
