Teenager killed in reported Aurora home invasion, shooting

A 16-year-old girl was shot and killed in an Aurora home invasion Tuesday morning and police are searching for a suspect.

Aurora officers responded to reports of a home invasion and shooting in an apartment complex in the 10600 block of East Jewell Avenue around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from the police department.

When they arrived, they found a 16-year-old girl with a gunshot wound, police said. Investigators didn’t say where she was shot.

The girl lived in the apartment that was broken into with her family, but no one else was injured, Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan said. Police aren’t sure if any items were taken from the apartment.

The block is home to the Willowick Apartments, a rental car facility, a used car dealer and other businesses. It’s just east of South Havana Street and south of East Colorado Avenue.

Officers performed life-saving measures on the girl until paramedics arrived at the scene to rush her to the hospital, where she later died, police said.

The teenager will be identified at a later date by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
