Two men have died in a crash that has closed a motorway.
Police said they were called at 22:40 GMT on Monday to the M40 between junction 9 for Bicester and junction 8A for Wheatley.
The men died at the scene and two other men were taken to hospital with serious injuries, Thames Valley Police said.
The stretch of motorway, which passes through both Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, is expected to be closed for most of the day, National Highways said.
The highways authority said Thames Valley Police remained at the scene carrying out collision investigation work.
“Although there is currently no estimate for a re-opening time available it is expected that the road will remain closed throughout this morning’s peak travel period and into the afternoon,” it added.
Motorists have been advised to divert towards Oxford, where heavy traffic has built up on the A34, A40 and A4142.
National Highways said drivers should consider delaying their journeys.
