Three treated by paramedics as residents flee flat blaze

Four fire engines rushed to Wood Close shortly after 7.30pm as two windows were blown out in a flat that had caught fire.

Crews wore breathing apparatus and entered the property, while an aerial platform was utilised to tackle the blaze.

Smoke was cleared with high-powered ventilation fans.

Three people were treated by ambulance staff at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Two fire engines remain outside the flat and fire services confirmed that the cause of the fire will be investigated tomorrow.

A 17-year-old girl who lived in the flat below that one that caught fire told our reporter on the scene that she heard a ‘massive bang.’

She said: “I thought it was my brother’s window that had been smashed. I looked outside and thought a car had hit our building, cause the flag was shaking.

“My brother went upstairs, kicking down the flat’s door to make sure everyone was out.

”I went downstairs and I was holding my two dogs in my hand, with my two cats and a cat carrier.

”There was smoke all in my mouth, I had no hands free to cover my mouth or anything.

”We ran outside with the dogs and other people helped us.

“All we could smell was smoke, as soon as it happened.

”We looked up to the top floor and all we could see was flames everywhere.”
