Newswise — The official start of hurricane season is here and according to the 2025 Atlantic basin hurricane forecast from NOAA, the 2025 season is calling for a well above-average storm count. UTHealth Houston experts are available to talk about the following topics:
- Hurricane season prep – Emergency medicine physicians are available to talk about how to safely prepare for the hurricane season.
- Hurricane season anxiety – UTHealth Houston psychologists have tips on the best way to mentally prepare for the season ahead.
- Hurricane preparedness for seniors – Emergency medicine kits are essential for our most vulnerable populations and geriatricians with UTHealth Houston can provide tips for caregivers.
I have included b-roll from a flood door drill at McGovern Medical School to ensure the doors are working properly and ready to protect our buildings in the event of severe weather. Here is some info to go with the video:
Each door is designed to be able to be closed by one person in less than 5 minutes. Upon closure, dual gasket seals are inflated to provide a watertight seal. The status of the doors can be monitored remotely via computer linkages through the building automation system. When a hurricane is approaching the area, the doors are closed 8 hours before landfall in Galveston, or when the floodalert.org indicator goes to “orange.”
