Fallen trees in storm-swept park repurposed as works of art

Members of the Victoria Park Community Trust were devastated when Storm Eowyn caused significant damage to the plants on January 24 last year.

The intense weather left more than 20 large trees lying on the ground – blocking access and causing an eyesore.

To improve the situation, local wood carver Justina Kasponyte from Roaming Chisel agreed to carve the planks of wood into outdoor sculptures and furniture.

The creations include a crocodile and benches, some of which will be child-size.

VPCT fundraised almost £7000 in donations for the art pieces and for 30 new trees, which were planted across the green space.

Steve Nelson, chair of VPCT, said: “We’re not just replacing trees, we’re giving the fallen ones a new life.

“This will be a lasting tribute to the park’s resilience and the community’s dedication.

“We are hoping locals will join us to help Victoria Park grow again, creatively and sustainably.”
