New miner’s lamp sculpture unveiled by County Durham town council

Following a series of community and school workshops with professional sculptor, Andrew McKeon – who also designed the Davy Lamp Sculptor at Bowburn – the council has revealed the designs for the four metre high sculpture, to be installed at Surtees Corner, Ferryhill Station.

The designs will commemorate the rich mining heritage of the town and has been designed in the style of the Geordie Lamp – sometimes called a Stephenson Lamp.

It will incorporate mining occupations and terms, that are specific to the Durham Coalfield area engraved around the column of the lamp.

Residents are invited to suggest additional occupations for inclusion in the design.

Proposals can be made via a comments form at Ferryhill Town Hall or via email to kyounghusband@ferryhill.gov.uk until March 26.

The designs will be on display at the town hall until the deadline.

For further details about this project or any others being developed by the council, get in touch with Karen Younghusband at Ferryhill Town Hall or call 01740-652157.
