North Yorkshire village pub with own brewery is CAMRA ‘pub of the season’

The Jolly Sailor Inn at Cawood was recently presented with a plaque from a coach party of members of York CAMRA.

The pub was recognised for the quality and range of its beers, which are always served in tip-top condition, the friendliness of its staff, traditional atmosphere, good food and an extensive range of events and entertainment.

Branch chairman Chris Tregellis told the Press: “The York branch of CAMRA is one of the largest in the county with 1100 and a branch area stretching from the  Aire all the way up to the heights of the North York Moors.

“Covering such a large area with so many excellent pubs is quite a task but dedicated CAMRA members try very hard.”

In addition to presenting a plaque to pub landlady Kathy Reece-King, members also visited other pubs in the area, plus the Don Valley Brewery in Doncaster.

Chris added: “It was an enjoyable day out, reacquainting members with some of the best drinking establishments in the area.  As York CAMRA says ” We are much more than just the city of York”.

Kathy told the Press she was overjoyed to receive the recognition from York CAMRA, which she hopes will help raise the profile of the pub, which has existed since 1840.

She said: “We are very friendly, kid-friendly, dog-friendly. I do not allow any swearing and I won’t tolerate any of the white stuff (drugs).”

The pub’s food offering is mainly pizzas now, with a delivery service now launched, after sales of them “have taken off.”

“However, we still do Sunday lunch, like what your mother or grandmother made. It’s homely with reasonable prices.”

The Jolly Sailor also has two rooms for let, with guests saying they like to talk to other regulars.

The pub also offers a range of events and activities, such as a Monday quiz, a craft group comes in weekly, there’s bingo on a Wednesday and on Thursday a group called the Ukeleles performs.

There’s also open mike nights, karaoke and discos. There’s bands as well, but the rising costs to stage them means there are less of them than there used to be. There are also events to mark Burns Night, Valentines Day and Mothers Day and similar days, Kathy added.

The Jolly Sailor also receives 5 stars on TripAdvisor, based on 15 reviews, with people praising its “great atmosphere, excellent beer and food, and great value for money” plus friendly service.

Google awards the Jolly Sailor 4.5 stars out of five, with similar praise for the beer, the characterful atmosphere, the food, friendly service and value for money.
