Angry mother slashed tyres of ex-partner’s car when he picked up his children

Rebecca Stubbs left her ex covered in cuts and scratches to his face before she slashed three tyres and a seat in his car.

The 32-year-old then assaulted and abused police officers who were called to deal with the situation, Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court heard.

Heather Blair, prosecuting, said the mother-of-three spat at one officer while delivering a vile torrent of racial and homophobic abuse towards them.

She said: “He (the former partner) went round to pick the children up and she had been sitting outside her house, she stood up and punched him to the face several times and scratching him to the face.”

The court heard how Stubbs then went into the house before returning moments later with a large kitchen knife and slashed three tyres on her ex-partner’s car before plunging the blade into one of the seats.

Miss Blair said the defendant became abusive and disruptive when the police arrived at the scene.

“During the struggle, she has stuck her nails in one of them and spat at another while calling the officer a ‘black ****’,” she said.

In a victim impact statement, Stubbs’ former partner said he was concerned about her violent behaviour.

He wrote: “I will never forgive her for putting our children at risk. Behaviour like this is wrong but in front of our children it is unforgiveable.”

Stubbs, of Swale Crescent, Great Lumley, near Chester-le-Street, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage, possession of a bladed article and racially aggravated common assault following her arrest on August 17, 2023.

The County Durham mother was also convicted of assault an emergency worker and assaulting her ex-partner following a trial in the same court.

Lucy Redshaw, mitigating, said her client was a ‘different person’ to the one who committed those offences and she was addressing her alcohol consumption.

She added: “She is horrified that she spat towards the officer and it was language that she wouldn’t usually use – it was all out of character.”

Lois Neal, the chairwoman of the magistrates’ bench, sentenced Stubbs to a two-year community order with 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days attached.

She added: “You have demonstrated positively with support services dealing with ‘hitting the bottle’ as you say.

“We can see there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation and you have demonstrated that.”

Stubbs was ordered to pay £565 in compensation to her former partner and a total of £300 in compensation to both police officers.
