Bishop Auckland Gladiators star ‘harassed on set by stalker’ as police probe launched

The former rugby star and American footballer from Bishop Auckland, real name Alex Gray, was also harassed at his flat while filming in Sheffield and when out meeting fans, The Sun on Sunday reports.

It comes as the rebooted version of Gladiators returned on Saturday (January 18) night for its second series on BBC One.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police confirmed they are aware of reports of a man in his 30s being stalked and harassed, and an investigation is underway.

They said: “We are aware of reports of a man in his 30s being subjected to stalking and harassment.

“An investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.”

Alex, 33, told the Sunday newspaper: “There was an incident. That’s as much as I can say, until something comes of it and there’s action taken.

“Maybe there might not be. I’m still waiting to hear. The police are doing their thing.”

Security was “beefed up”, according to the newspaper, by the BBC and production company Hungry Bear Media in the wake of the incident.

Alex, from Bishop Auckland, went to Barnard Castle School and learnt his game at Darlington Mowden Park, going on to captain England at Under 16 and Under 18 level.

He then turned out for Newcastle Falcons, London Irish and Bath Rugby during a distinguished career which saw him capped seven times by England’s Under-20s.

The 6ft6in man-mountain then moved into rugby sevens, playing for England, before he moved to the US as the first British rugby player to switch to the NFL.
