Firefighters remove gas cannister from ‘risk zone’ before tackling fire in Bitterne

Shortly after 11pm on Thursday, July 3, firefighters were alerted to a shed fire on Quayside Road.

Crews from St Marys and Hightown arrived at the scene of the blaze to find smoke and flames issuing from a shed and the adjoining outbuilding.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a gas cannister was removed from the “risk zone” before firefighters used hose reels and jets to douse the flames.

Ventilation fans were in operation to disperse smoke as crews dampened down the scene.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The St Mary’s and Hightown crews arrived to find smoke and flames issuing from a shed and the adjoining outbuilding on Quayside Road.

“Hampshire and Isle of Wight Rescue Service returned to station at around 12.30am.”
