W Alderson & Son has been serving Cockerton since 1934 when Wilf Alderson set up shop just outside the village.
Now in its third generation and run by Wilf’s grandson Nigel Alderson, the firm prides itself on quality butchery.
It is now up for a coveted gong at the National Craft Butchers awards, set to take place in Nottingham on Monday (June 30).
W Alderson & Son has been nominated in the ‘North of England Small’ category. It comes just weeks after the family butchery was nominated in the top 10 in the Echo’s Best Farm Shop, Deli and Butcher competition.
Speaking last month Nigel said: “We make all of our own pies, burgers, sausages, black pudding, and we cook all of our own meat for the deli counter.
“We buy all animals as carcass and butcher them traditionally. We do lots of cuts of meat, and lots of made up meals – we found that every day people ask “what’s for tea?” so we thought we would help people with that and create our own meals, so it is quick and convenient but also high quality.

“We have more than 20 different products in that range.”
Eleanor O’Brien, from the National Craft Butchers, said: “We are blessed with some of the most talented butchers in the world. The British Butchery Awards offers them the chance to have their moment in the limelight and be recognised by their fellow butchers.”
The event will be posted by former rugby ace Phil Vickery MBE.
