Neighbours has introduced a gay love triangle. (Prime Video)
Neighbours has appeared to make way for its first-ever gay “throuple” on the soap opera this week, in an unapologetically, “confidently queer” storyline.
Ahead of its cancellation, which has occurred for the second time in less than three years, Neighbours appears to be introducing its viewers to the wonderful world of LGBTQ+ polyamorous relationships for the first time. Of course, the series featured its first-ever polyamorous relationship in 2021, with Amy Greenwood (Jacinta Stapleton), Ned Willis (Ben Hall), and Levi Canning (Richie Morris).
In what has started out as a love triangle this week, Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) has started dating again after the death of his husband, and reconnected with two of his former partners, Rhett Norman (Liam Maguire), and Colton Key (Jakob Ambrose).
During the trio’s yoga session, both Rhett and Colton were trying to one-up each other in a bid for Aaron’s affections both on the mat, and beyond. Rhett interrupted a moment between Aaron and Colton in the outdoor studio and said, “I heard about the class and thought I should come and check it out. Mind if I join you two?”
The awkwardness culminated in an uncomfortably long handshake between Aaron’s admirers, literally putting him in the middle, and the pair doing push-ups before the class had even begun. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of Savasana, people?
Actor Maguire told Yahoo Lifestyle that he was initially “intimidated” by having to compete with Ambrose, but said the storyline “sounded like heaps of fun”.
“Reading the scripts I kept finding myself laughing and that felt like the most progressive thing about the storyline, that it’s so confidently queer while being able to be funny and playful because all the characters are entirely comfortable with who they are,” he told the outlet.
Ambrose added that he was “very excited” to “portray queer characters in a really fun, messy, playful, honest way”.
“It’s not so irreverent and polite,” he said. “I think it’s important that all our colours are seen on screen – the happy family, but also the messiness it sometimes takes to get there. Working with Liam and competing in a way has been the best way to be forced to step it up.
Neighbours continues on Monday (23 June) on Amazon Prime Video in the UK and US, and in Australia at 4pm on Channel 10 and repeats at 6.30pm on 10 Peach Comedy. Episodes are released on Mondays to Thursdays.
