PHOTOS: Lunar eclipse seen in San Diego sky

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Skywatchers in San Diego were treated to a stunning celestial display on Thursday night as a lunar eclipse graced the night skies. The rare event, which saw the moon pass through Earth’s shadow, captivated locals with its dramatic transformation.

The lunar eclipse, which began just after 9 p.m., occurs when Earth is perfectly positioned between the sun and moon to block most light from reflecting off the lunar surface. Thursday’s event will be the only one visible in the U.S. this year.

Those who looked up last night may have noticed the moon taking on a reddish hue, a phenomenon often referred to as a “blood moon.” Put simply, the reddish color is caused when the moon is within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, casting a warm glow on the moon’s surface.

Observers across the county were able to witness the incredible and rare sight. Photographers, both professional and amateur, captured the celestial display on camera. For those who missed the lunar eclipse, here are some photos of the moment snapped right here in San Diego County.

Experts say lunar eclipses are relatively infrequent. Thursday night’s eclipse allowed San Diegans to witness an awe-inspiring natural event. The next one visible from San Diego is expected in 2026.
