SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A new community hub for seniors has officially opened in Logan Heights, providing a space for those ages 60 and up to gather, engage and stay active.
The Memorial Senior Center, operated by the City of San Diego’s Parks and Recreation Department, celebrated its grand opening Friday morning, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that was attended by Mayor Todd Gloria, local community leaders and residents.
“This is an investment in our local seniors to make sure that we are caring for them and we’re giving them free options to improve their quality of life,” Gloria commented while attending the event.
The senior center, located in the heart of Logan Heights, offers a wide range of activities and services aimed at enriching the lives of older adults in the area. Seniors can do different activities there, such as dancing, karaoke or gardening. They are offered at little to no cost.
Open five days a week from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the center is designed to foster connection and provide a space for seniors to engage in social and creative activities. Lunch is also provided during the week, while supplies last, as part of a partnership with Serving Seniors.
“This part of an overall strategy to take our existing city assets and put them to them to better use. This building was not well utilized before; it will be now,” Mayor Gloria continued. “We just installed a new dog park here as well. Activating this existing park for the benefit of the full community is part of our overall strategy during these very difficult budget times to make better use of what we have n hand already.”
This new Logan Heights center is one of several operated by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department under its AgeWell Services program, which supports seniors throughout San Diego. Other centers include the Balboa Park Senior Lounge, Cathy Hopper Friendship Center and Park de la Cruz Community Center.
The Memorial Senior Center is located at 610 S 30th St. in San Diego.
