Saratoga wins AAA title, sweep Colonie with 5-1 win

TROY, NY (NEWS10) — The Saratoga Springs Baseball team won the Section 2 Class AAA championship, sweeping Colonie in the championship series with a 5-1 victory in Game 2.

After winning Game 1 on Friday, the Blue Streaks wasted no time carrying the momentum into Game 2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The scoring began when Alex Landau grounded out with a runner on third, good enough to bring in the opening score of the game. Two batters later, Cooper Villiere singled into left to bring in another run to give Saratoga the 2-0 edge.

Colonie did not back down, responding in the third inning. After Nate Figueroa tripled, Jackson Mackenzie brought him in to score on a ground out to cut the deficit to just 1.

The Blue Streaks would get that run back and add another in the home half of the inning. After loading the bases, Saratoga scored 2 runs on 2 errors by the Wolfpack to extend the lead to 4-1. Looking to add more in the fifth, Saratoga once again loaded the bases and Jack Covell delivered with a single into left field to bring in another run to push the lead to 5-1.

The offense performed well for the Blue Streaks, but they were led by the performance from their starter on the mound. Brendan Kantscheidt threw 6.0 innings, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 6 to earn the win.
