DENVER (KDVR) — It has felt like summer in Denver, but the late April snowstorm reminded Coloradans that snow wasn’t over yet.
It’s been a mild winter in Colorado, with even March, the snowiest month, recording only 2 inches of snow, marking one of Denver’s least snowy Marchs in history. April brought more warm weather, with temperatures hitting a record 85 degrees and many days in the high 70s.
However, there was also snow with those warm temperatures.
The recent snowstorm on Friday served as a reminder of winter, leaving over a foot of snow, delaying over a thousand flights and shutting down high country roads. While this snowstorm left as much as over 5 inches in Denver, Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Greg Perez said it could be the last.
When will it stop snowing in Colorado?
A Colorado meteorologist’s rule of thumb is that the snow is usually over after Mother’s Day, which lands on May 11, but looking at the upcoming forecast with temperatures staying in the 60s and 70s with a few spring showers, Perez said the late April snowstorm was likely the last for Denver.
Perez said Denver is getting warmer and closer to the severe weather season starting in May. This means storms, hail and strong winds, but no snow.
While the latest Denver snowstorm could likely be the last in the Mile High City this season, it wouldn’t be out of the question to see another storm heading into May. According to the National Weather Service, Denver has seen snow as late as the end of May and even into June.
As for the rest of Colorado, Perez said there’s still more snow on the way. Colorado has seen mountain snow through the middle of summer, but it usually slows down by mid to late May.
