Denise Welch shared a humorous anecdote as she appeared on the Oscars special of Loose Women
Denise Welch reminisced while on Loose Women as she remembered working with TV legend Ricky Tomlinson during Monday’s ( March 3) show.
During Monday’s episode, Ruth Langsford, Kelly Brook, Denise Welch and Ayda Field all gathered together on the panel as they hosted a special edition of the ITV daytime show as an Oscars party.
While the studio was golden and the ladies dressed to impress, TV icon Ricky Tomlinson paid a visit to the studio as he spoke about some of his favourite career moments.
The 85-year-old actor is best known for his role as Jim Royle in The Royle Family, but he also starred as Bobby Grant in the soap opera Brookside and DCI Charlie Wise in Cracker.
As the panel discussed his highlights, Denise jokingly asked: “Obviously, it’s Oscars day, who would you say in the whole of your career – and it’s been a really long and wonderful career – was your favourite leading lady?” as she pointed to herself.
Ricky took her hand, kissed the back of it, and responded: “I can’t remember her name!” which left Denise in a fit of laughter.
Denise then added: “We did three series of a show called Down to Earth and Ricky and I were husband and wife. We spent three years, pretty much, in Cornwall together and I have never laughed and gone through as many panty pads in my entire life, I can tell you.”
Upon hearing the praise, Ricky declared: “I’ve been so lucky, I’ve worked with so many people and I know nothing about show business.”
He continued: “I was a political prisoner and I didn’t star in the game until my late 40s.” He then reminisced on how little he knew about the industry when he asked someone “are you in show business?” and it turned out to be Robert De Niro.
Before fame, Ricky was a plasterer who participated in the UK’s first national building workers’ strike in 1972. The strike was in protest of low pay, dangerous working conditions, and unfair employment practices. This led to him being arrested and sentenced to two years in prison.
Loose Women airs on weekdays from 12:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
