DENVER (KDVR) — Power was out for a large portion of Boulder on Sunday night.
According to Xcel Energy’s electric outage map, about 8,673 customers were without power as of 9:30 p.m.
The Boulder Police Department reported that power was out in the city from Baseline Road to Table Mesa Road, to the Hill and “as far east as Morehead.”
The agency said that Xcel Energy was “working on it” but asked members of the public to treat all intersections and non-working traffic signals as four-way stops.
Boulder is under a high wind warning until 5 a.m. Monday. West winds were expected to remain at about 30 to 45 mph throughout the night, with gusts of up to 80 mph forecasted. Localized gusts of up to 85 mph are also forecasted for wind-prone areas above the timberline.
Xcel previously has announced it would conduct public safety power shutoff in the event of extreme winds, relative humidity and fuel/vegetation moisture that would lend to wildfire risks. The company shut off power to around 55,000 customers in April 2024 due to high winds, but it is unclear if that’s what happened Sunday or if there was something else that led to the power outage.
