The union representing more than 650 workers at the mining giant, Glencore, in Sudbury, reached a tentative deal for a new contract on Friday evening as a strike was looming.
Ratification voting is now set for Sunday.
In a text to CBC on Saturday morning, Eric Boulay, the president of Mine Mill Local 598, the union representing the workers said: “I can confirm a tentative agreement has been reached. It will be presented to the members Saturday and voting will take place on Sunday.”.
The union members had approved a strike mandate in January.
The workers’ collective agreement with the company expired at midnight on Friday.
Glencore runs two nickel, copper and precious metal mines in Sudbury, along with a mill and smelter. The company employs 1,200 people in the region and supports another 1,200 contractors.
