Britpop icons Pulp were cheered as they emerged on stage as Glastonbury festival’s surprise Saturday headliners, confirming they were the mysterious act ‘Patchwork’.
The band, fronted by Jarvis Cocker, appeared on the Pyramid Stage and received a huge welcome from the crowd. Cocker spoke to the crowd saying: “Hi, my name is Jarvis, hello,” he said. “This is Pulp. Sorry to the people who were expecting Patchwork. Did you know it was us?” The crowd responded with a “yes”, to which Cocker replied: “How?”
The rumour mill had ben grinding for days with speculations on social media, with fans suggesting it could be Chappell Roan, Harry Styles, and Robbie Williams as potential secret acts, before the latter put those rumours to bed.
But signs pointed towards Pulp being the surprise performers on the Pyramid stage, which was all but confirmed on the fourth day of the festival.
Pulp performed several of its hit songs, such as Sorted for E’s & Wizz as well as Disco 2000, which were first played when the band headlined the festival at Worthy Farm back in 1995 – 30 years ago.
“You could say those songs were born at Glastonbury,” Cocker said.
It comes as the band released their first album in 24 years.
Titled ‘More’, the album was released at the start of June, before the band revealed a UK tour with two sold out nights at the O2 in London.
When discussing te album, Jarvis Cocker said: “When we started touring again in 2023, we practiced a new song called ‘Hymn of the North’ during soundchecks and eventually played it at the end of our second night at Sheffield Arena.
“This seemed to open the floodgates: we came up with the rest of the songs on this album during the first half of 2024.”
He later added: “We hope you enjoy the music. It was written and performed by four human beings from the North of England, aided and abetted by five other human beings from various locations in the British Isles.
“No A.I. was involved during the process. This album is dedicated to Steve Mackey. This is the best that we can do. Thanks for listening.”
