Flooding reported in parts of northwestern Ontario after day-long storm brings over 50 mm of rain | CBC News
Parts of northwestern Ontario are under water Tuesday Morning, following a day-long rainstorm in the region.
Some road closures have been reported by the Ministry of Transportation, and Lakehead District School Board has closed Whitefish Valley Public School for the day, all due to flooding.
The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) said 42 to 67 millimetres of precipitation was recorded in area gauges overnight, with the highest amounts recorded west of the city of Thunder Bay in the Corbett Creek and Whitefish River gauges.
“Flooding is occurring in low-lying areas and area watercourses are expected to continue to rise Tuesday which may result in additional flooding. Flooded roads in the Townships of O’Connor and Gillies and Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge have been reported.,” reads a flood warning issued by the LRCA, which was updated Tuesday morning.
“The public is advised to pay attention to their surroundings and motorists are cautioned to exercise caution during their morning commute and to never drive through a flooded road. Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children away from all watercourses and discuss the hazards of cold fast flowing water,” the warning said.
The LRCA said the flood warning will remain in effect until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.
The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) also issued a flood watch on Monday for Dryden, Fort Frances, and Atikokan districts.
The flood watch will remain in effect until Wednesday evening, according to the MNR.
A number of road closures have been reported as of Tuesday morning due to flooding. That includes a section of Highway 588 near Hymers, and a section of Highway 595 in South Gillies.
