Filming of Scottish period piece in Charlotte Square wraps up  – Deadline News

FILMING for a period piece that took over Charlotte Square has now wrapped up, and the square returned to the present day.

Film crews were seen near the private garden in the city centre, and actors dressed in 19th century clothing were spotted on set.

The film is a retelling of a court case from 1811, which was made into a play and later a 1961 film starring Audrey Hepburn.

Charlotte Square was turned into a bustling 19th century street for the production, with fake cobbles being installed and horse-drawn carriages seen.

The film, titled Miss Pirie And Miss Woods, centres around a scandal involving two teachers at a girl’s school in Edinburgh.

The teachers Jane Pirie and Marianne Woods, both co-founders of the boarding school, were accused of having an affair by a student named Jane Cumming.

Upon hearing the news, Jane’s grandmother Lady Helen Cumming Gordon removed her from the school and advised other parents to do the same, leaving the institution deserted in just a few days.

The women lost their reputations and sources of income, and sued Lady Cumming Gordon for libel in 1811, which ended in a “scotch verdict” or “not proven” verdict.

Portions of the upcoming film depicting this scandal were filmed on Charlotte Square this week, with both exterior and interior shots using the north side of the square.

A road closure was in place earlier this week, and intermittent road control was enacted until yesterday.

Residents in the area were notified of essential production vehicles which used parking on the square, which required other cars to be moved away.

Though the street was filled with actors and extras wearing 19th century garments this week, filming was wrapped up yesterday, the final production equipment cleared away and the square returned to normal.

Peaky Blinders star Charlie Murphy and Flora Nicholson, who featured in Netflix series Black Mirror, are leading the film which is directed by German director Sophie Heldman.
