Film fans are furious as Hollywood is reportedly lining up a remake of another iconic movie.
It’s been 56 years since Chitty Chitty Bang Bang soared onto the big screen, with the flying car capturing the imagination of people all around the world.
From Dick Van Dyke’s Caractacus Potts and Sally Ann Howes as Truly Scrumptious to Robert Helpmann’s sister turn as the Child Catcher, the 1968 classic has gone down in history.
Now, Deadline has reported that EON Productions (the studio behind the James Bond franchise) and Amazon MGM are working on a ‘reimagined film adaptation’.
It’s said the project is in its ‘early stages’ with executives looking into potential directors and writers, and it’s safe to say fans are not in favour of Ian Fleming’s novel getting a new movie.
‘Sacrilege,’ wrote @fearmeitsbre on X, while @MasteroftheTDS asked: ‘Why are we rebooting this? The original is a classic.’
@Moonesch suggested people could ‘just watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, as @bowski insisted: ‘This does not need a reboot. It’s perfect the way it is.’
Other fan like @SirPerservere insisted the original is ‘perfect as it is’, adding: ‘Any attempts to remake the movie will ruin it!’
‘Re Chitty Chitty Bang Bang reboot – the thought of anyone even thinking about trying to play The Childcatcher and expecting to do a better job than Robert Helpmann has me in an absolute rage,’ argued @yarnydeb1.
‘Don’t you bloody dare, those are my childhood nightmares you’re playing with.’
Meanwhile, other people found it amusing that news of the remake has come before an update on the long-awaited next James Bond movie, with fans still waiting since Daniel Craig’s final 007 outing in 2021’s No Time To Die.
‘EON Productions can’t start a new James Bond but can make a new Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?! Lmao,’ quipped @_Brandon_Bailey.
And @YOLTpodcast joked: ‘It turns out Aaron Taylor Johnson isn’t playing James Bond, he’s playing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!’
The original film, which was adapted from Fleming’s beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl and director Ken Hughes.
If followed the adventures of inventor Caractacus and his kids after they saved a scrapped racing car only to find out it could fly.
From the title track to classics like Hushabye Mountain, Toot Sweets and Truly Scrumptious, it’s gone down movie history.
From fans’ reactions, it’s unclear if a remake would have the same success.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe for best original songs, while the movie was later turned into a stage musical in the early 2000s.
The Sherman brothers wrote six new songs for the production, while the show was also nominated for Tony and Olivier Awards.
