England-Afghanistan cricket match to go ahead despite calls for boycott

England’s next game in the tournament is against Afghanistan on Wednesday in Lahore. Some MPs and human rights groups say the team should boycott the match because of the Taliban’s clampdown on women’s rights, which has seen the Afghan women’s cricket team forced into exile.

Despite international cricket rules saying men’s test teams must also have a women’s team, cricketing authorities here have rejected calls to boycott the game, even as they acknowledge Afghanistan’s ‘gender apartheid’.
