This is the latest in a string of similar incidents along the road, which is a major bus route in and out of the city centre.

Contractors are back on site again today (Friday) resurfacing the road.

First York buses are not stopping in Merchantgate, which has partly reopened, and the company is telling all passengers to board their buses in Piccadilly instead.

Service 10 (towards Stamford Bridge): is now running via Piccadilly, Stonebow, Foss Islands Road, then back to normal at Lawrence Street.

Service U2 (towards University): has been diverted via Coppergate and Clifford Street and Service U1 (towards University) has been diverted via Stonebow, Foss Islands Road onto the normal route at Lawrence Street.

The water caused the tarmac to buckle and break up in Walmgate and was flowing all the way down the road towards Fossgate.

One of the pavements remains open so pedestrians can pass the site barriers with care.
