(NEXSTAR) – Whether it’s just a spot that gets a lot of foot traffic or is your dog’s favorite spot to relieve themself, dead spots in your lawn are never a pleasant sight. While you’d like to take the time to fix these areas in the yard, you need grass seed — which can be pretty expensive.
Thankfully, a lawncare hack has hit the social media waves that shows off a common household object that can make that expensive bag of grass seed last a bit longer and help your grass grow all the same.
The object in question is available in every bathroom in America — toilet paper.
As strange as this may sound, it actually works tremendously well. Using toilet paper offers protection for the grass seed from birds or any other animals and keeps the seed moist.
According to Family Handyman, you just need toilet paper, grass seed and water. In a larger bowl or bucket, add grass seed and then just enough water so that it creates a kind of slurry. Then add toilet paper (preferably the biodegradable kind) until it creates a paper mache type mixture.
For the best results, remove any dead grass from the area you’re trying to grow, then rake it to open up the surface. Once that’s done, add your layer of grass seed and toilet paper roughly an inch thick that covers the area. Water the area daily, and you should begin to see grass grow in a weeks time.
If you’re worried at all about seeing a white patch of toilet paper in your yard, a quick solution is to add green food coloring to the mixture.
The bizarre hack has been seen on various TikTok accounts over the past few years to great success. One individual even performed a test to see how well the hack did against traditional methods of growing grass.
