Cool, cloudy weather with wind and rain on the forecast

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The region is set to experience cool and generally cloudy weather through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather pattern will also bring windy conditions, especially in the mountains and deserts, with gusty winds reaching coastal areas by Tuesday. Also expected is intermittent rounds of precipitation, particularly on Monday and Thursday.

As explained by local meteorologists, the weather pattern is influenced by a low-pressure system sitting about 400 miles off the Oregon coast. This system is expected to move eastward through Monday, increasing the pressure gradients over Southern California and bringing stronger winds to the region.

Mountain and desert areas, in particular, are likely to see wind speeds intensify starting Monday, with gusts possibly reaching up to 75 mph in areas like Ocotillo and Borrego Springs. Weather officials say coastal areas will also experience windy conditions on Tuesday, with gusts possibly reaching 40 mph.

Rainfall is expected to be more widespread starting Monday, with models forecasting between 0.1 and 0.2 inches of rain in lower elevations, according to the National Weather Service. Mountain regions may see higher amounts, with some areas potentially receiving over 0.5 inches and isolated spots reaching 1 inch.

The likelihood of precipitation will be highest from Monday afternoon through Monday night, with the probability of rain ranging from 24 to 41%, depending on location. A map of expected precipitation probabilities can be seen below.

The cooler conditions will continue through Thursday, with temperatures expected to be 5 to 10 degrees below normal on Monday, and 10 to 15 degrees below normal from Tuesday to Thursday as the upper low brings colder air aloft. The cooler temperatures are likely to persist in the region until Friday, with only modest warming expected for the weekend.
