A man is in the hospital after a three-alarm fire spread to multiple houses in Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood Saturday afternoon, authorities say.
At 4 p.m., Toronto Fire was called about a house fire near the intersection of Kewbeach and Kenilworth avenues, division commander Paul O’Brien told reporters Saturday.
“Crews arrived shortly after [and] were met with heavy black smoke and heavy fire conditions at the rear,” O’Brien said.
The fire spread to an adjacent house and caused heat damage to a third building to the south, O’Brien said. Several surrounding residences in the area were evacuated.
The 35 Toronto Fire units that responded to the call were able to get the fire under control shortly after, O’Brien said, but were continuing to douse hot spots as of 6 p.m.
Queen Street E. was closed between Woodbine Avenue and Waverly Road Saturday evening as crews remained on the scene.
The cause of the fire, as well as how it spread, is under investigation, O’Brien said.
