
One Baldwin Park police officer was killed and another is hospitalized after a suspect opened fire on Saturday night in Baldwin Park, California.
The incident happened at around 7:15 p.m. near Filhurst Avenue and Los Angeles Street in Baldwin Park, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Baldwin Park police officers were called to the the area after learning of shots fired. At some point after arrival the suspect opened fire and the officers were wounded.
One officer was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter, while the second was transported by ambulance, firefighters said. Both were taken to LA General Hospital, where one of the officers died. He has not yet been identified.
The second officer is said to be in stable condition.
At around 9 p.m., LASD deputies told CBS News Los Angeles that a suspect had been taken into custody. They did not provide details on where or how they were located.
Sheriff Robert Luna said during a press conference that the suspect was shot by police during the incident and taken to a hospital for treatment. He is in stable condition at the latest.
Another person was also found with multiple gunshot wounds at the location where officers were dispatched on Saturday. They have not yet been identified, but Sheriff Luna said that they believe the suspect is also involved in the individual’s death.
The scene where the shooting occurred remained active for hours as dozens of officers, including some SWAT personnel with two BearCats, could be seen outside of some homes in the area with guns drawn. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were also on scene to take over the investigation.
Dozens of evidence markers could be seen in the area where the police investigation remained ongoing throughout the night.
Surveillance video from one home in the area shows multiple officers running down Filhurst Avenue with guns drawn. In another video as many as a dozen gunshots can be heard.
Baldwin Park is located just east of Los Angeles.
