Albany Diocese Bishop warns of financial, maintenance crisis

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Bishop Edward Scharfenberger released a letter on Monday warning of a financial and maintenance crisis among the Diocese of Albany. The bishop said they may have to relinquish one-third of the 126 parish churches and other buildings as well as some of the remaining parish schools.

Scharfenberger goes on to explain that in order to maintain a solid, long-term future the Diocese must act to preserve itself. It was less than a month ago when the Diocese announced the closure of two schools, All Saints in Albany and Sacred Heart School in Troy, which they reported was a difficult but necessary decision.

The bishop said while this plan is not entirely focused on mergers and closures, the closing or sale of some churches and schools must be anticipated. Scharfenberger emphasizes in the letter that this is a process to focus each parish on its mission to make the best use of its personal and material resources.

More details on this process will be released in June.
