'Romantic rivalry' leads to shooting, SWAT incident in Northwest Indiana

PORTAGE, Ind. — A “romantic rivalry” lead to a shooting and SWAT situation in Northwest Indiana, according to police.

Just after 4:20 p.m., Portage police responded to the 200 block of Greta Court on the report of a man being shot.

Police learned that the shooting had actually occurred in the 300 block of Jacobs Place, but the victim, a 28-year-old Hobart man, had been moved to Greta Court.

He was flown to a trauma center and is expected to survive.

Police believe the shooting may have been motivated by a romantic rivalry and the suspect was identified as Jim Ferguson, 27, of Chicago.

Police departments in the area were told to be on the lookout for him and in the early morning hours of Tuesday, his vehicle was located in the 1600 block of Bluebird Court in Lowell.

SWAT responded and two women and an infant left the home and told police Ferguson was inside.

After failed attempts to negotiate, a chemical agent was deployed at the home in an effort to drive him out.

It worked and he was placed into custody without incident.

Ferguson was charged with aggravated battery and had active warrants in Lake County.
