Crews respond to fire at abandoned gas station in East County

EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Crews responded to a structure fire at an abandoned gas station in El Cajon Wednesday morning.

According to Battalion Chief Robert Laatsch with Heartland Fire & Rescue, a call came in around 5:30 a.m. reporting a blaze in the 400 block of El Cajon Boulevard.

“When units arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from a small detached building at an abandoned gas station. [It took] about 15 minutes for our units to knock down the fire,” Chief Laatsch told FOX 5/KUSI at the scene.

The fire official also explained that there were some structural issues that prevented crews from entering the burning building, however, they were still able to extinguish the blaze.

There were no reports of damages to any surrounding buildings, with the fire chief explaining that they were able to prevent the fire from reaching nearby apartments.

No one was injured in connection to this incident.

Crews are expected to remain on scene for a few hours to conduct clean up efforts.
