NY Knicks fan receives $60K scholarship to attend UAlbany

NEW YORK (NEWS10) — An incoming freshman to the University at Albany received a huge surprise before the New York Knicks game last Friday at Madison Square Garden. Calvin Mar received a $60,000 Garden of Dreams Inspire Scholarship for school.

The 18-year-old fan was presented with the scholarship by Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns. Both Mar and Towns have lost a parent. Mar’s father passed away unexpectedly on Father’s Day in 2016.

Mar was born premature with multiple congenital anomalies that have impacted his health throughout his life. He plans to study musical theatre at UAlbany to help him pursue his dream of becoming an actor.

After the game, Mar also received a signed jersey from Towns.

The Garden of Dreams Foundation works with the MSG Family of Companies to provide life-changing opportunities for young people in need. The Garden of Dreams Inspire Scholarship Program has awarded over $6M toward the higher education of deserving high school seniors since its inception in 2015.
