Armed police and helicopters spotted as men arrested on suspicion of kidnap

At around 10am on Thursday, April 10, several police cars were seen travelling through Tyldesley, and onto a property on Samuel Street in Atherton, after making enquiries regarding two outstanding wanted men.

Upon arrival, it was established that the occupants had locked themselves in the property.

More resources from response teams alongside specialist resources and police negotiators were deployed to the area as the situation developed to engage with the occupants.

Following the incident, two men aged 31 and 21 have been arrested on suspicion of kidnap, a possession of bladed article and recall to prison.

One woman aged 22 was also arrested on suspicion of failing to appear at court.

No injuries have been reported and although a police scene remains in place, officers say that the incident was brought to a “safe and swift conclusion”.

Inspector Sam Davies from GMP’s Wigan district, said: “We understand this event may have caused considerable concern to local members of the public as a large response from GMP was seen in the area to bring this matter to a safe conclusion, we do not believe there to be any threat to the wider community as this was an isolated incident.

“Neighbourhood officers will remain in the area, they are there for you, if you have any concerns please come and speak to them.

“Additionally, if anyone has any information or footage if you were in and around Samuel Street this morning, please get in touch.
