A police hunt is underway to track down the mum of a baby – after the newborn was found dead in a bag. The tot was dumped outside a church, and officers are now investigating the grim find.

Officers are urging the woman who gave birth to the youngster in London to seek urgent medical attention.

The Metropolitan Police said: “Officers were called at 12:46hrs on Tuesday, 25 March to Talbot Road, W11, following a report that the body of a baby had been found in a bag, left outside a church.

“London Ambulance Service also attended and sadly the baby was declared dead at the scene. Officers remain in the area and urgent enquiries are ongoing to locate the baby’s mother.

“At this stage we have not established the baby’s gender or exact age.” The church sits at the very end of Talbot Road, in the city’s upmarket Notting Hill area, and is a Grade II listed building.

The police’s primary goal was to find the baby’s mother, it said, and urged them to go to hospital straight away. It’s believed she might’ve only very recently given birth before leaving the baby behind.

Superintendent Owen Renowden said: “This is an extremely sad and shocking matter and officers are working hard to establish the circumstances around what has taken place.

“This investigation is in the early stages and our immediate priority is to locate the baby’s mother, who we believe may have very recently given birth. If you are the baby’s mother and are reading this, please come forward to police or medical professionals.”

The Mirror reports he added: “You must feel very frightened but please let us help – we are really worried about you and it is vitally important you get medical assistance and support.

“You can walk into any hospital, or a police station.” Anyone who may have any information about this incident should contact police on 101, quoting reference CAD 3431/25March.
