‘Cheers to 10 years’ – Maisie hosts charity ball

Maisie Bulmer’s ‘Cheers to Ten Years’ event will mark the 10th anniversary of a fundraising ball to support cancer charities and raise awareness of the Anthony Nolan donor register.

Now 26, former Malton School pupil Maisie was just 16 when she found a walnut-sized lump in her neck and was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in May 2014.

She finished chemotherapy that October, but was told on Christmas Eve 2014 that the cancer had returned and faced more high-dose chemotherapy and radiotherapy, including a six-week stay in isolation at Leeds General Infirmary.

At the beginning of the following April she was told she had again relapsed and the cancer had come back and the only option left was a bone marrow transplant.

At the age of 18, a suitable donor from Germany was found, but unfortunately medication during the operation permanently damaged her kidneys. After a gruelling five years on dialysis she received a kidney transplant in 2022.

Despite her illness, Maisie and her family have raised more than £30,000 for cancer charities and she completed a B-Tech at Bishop Burton College a year early.

Maisie is now chairwoman of Ryedale District Young Farmers’ Club and in spite of plenty of health-related hurdles along the way she has gone on to have a career she loves with Chippindale Foods Ltd, overseeing the production from just short of a million hens from across Cumbria, Carlisle and the North East whose eggs go into Morrisons supermarkets.

“It’s a case of cheers to ten years,” said Maisie Bulmer, whose farming family from Salton have been busy helping her organise the charity ball on March 22 at York Racecourse.

“2Money raised will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust, Anthony Nolan and Kidney Research Yorkshire who have all been amazing to me and so many thousands of others over the years.

Maisie’s mum Wendy, together with her older sister Rosie Wall, are busy selling the last few tickets, priced at £60 each, for the black-tie ball. The event includes a three-course dinner and dancing. They are also keen to speak to businesses willing to sponsor or donate raffle prizes.

“Maisie is a big advocate of people getting registered through Anthony Nolan for bone marrow, along with organ donation and giving blood,” said Wendy.

“It seemed important, ten years on, to mark the milestone and to celebrate how far Maisie has come. Maisie chose these three charities that have had the biggest impact on her life and we’re determined to both help raise their profile and much-needed funds for them.”
