Jinkx Monsoon Broadway domination continues (@ohmaryplay/ X)
Two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon will take over from Titus Burgess in Tony winner Cole Escola’s Broadway smash Oh, Mary!
Broadway’s Oh, Mary! which was created by Cole Escola – who recently made queer history at the Tony Awards by becoming the first non-binary actor to win the Leading Actor in a Play category – focuses on Mary Todd Lincoln, former First Lady of the United States and wife of Abraham Lincoln until his assassination in 1865.
In Escola’s take, Mary is somewhat of an idiot, becoming a “madcap, cabaret-obsessed alcoholic“, and though Escola originated the role, in which they are currently starring until 21 June, two new Marys are waiting in the wings.
First, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Titus Burgess, will succeed Escola for six weeks from 23 June – and he will be succeeded by Drag Race-legend-turned-Broadway-juggernaut Jinkx Monsoon.
Monsoon, who is currently starring in Pirates! The Penzance Musical, will star as Mary 4 August to 27 September.
Monsoon took to social media to share the news, writing, “I walked into the Lyceum Theatre and sat down with the President of Oh, Mary! and said, ‘I want to make history.’ And that’s what this is.”

“Now—I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Cole Escola is the funniest person alive,” Monsoon said in a statement.
“Oh, Mary! is one of the best, funniest, most energizing things I’ve seen in my life. To be invited to live in this playground for a time is not only an honor and a privilege, but a lovely chance to showcase the writing talents of one friend, the directorial talents of another, and everything else that comes with this singular production. Happy to trade in one pair of bloomers for another.”
Monsoon will be out on 9 and 10 September for her Oregon Symphony concert in Portland.
Casting for the rest of Monsoon’s stint is yet to be announced, with original cast members Conrad Ricamora as Mary’s Husband, James Scully as Mary’s Teacher, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s Chaperone, and Tony Macht as Mary’s Husband’s Assistant currently starring.
Oh, Mary! was nominated in several Tony Award categories; Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play category for queer How to Get Away with Murder star Conrad Ricamora, and Best Direction of a Play and Best Costume Design of a Play categories.
Monsoon first appeared on season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which she won – and then returned in All Stars 7, which she also won.
