Severe thunderstorms are expected to blanket portions of Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park Wednesday afternoon.
Environment Canada issued a warning shortly before 1 p.m., encouraging residents to take cover and avoid driving if they find themselves in affected areas.
As of about 1:45 p.m., a nearly stationary area of severe thunderstorms extends from just north of Fort Saskatchewan to Beaverhill Lake to Vegreville.
The national weather service said the current weather conditions could produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Portions of northwest Alberta may also see funnel clouds develop throughout the day.
This comes as a thunderstorm in late May set the record for the second strongest winds on record in Edmonton.
