With Labubu dolls conquering the world, one Moscow restaurant decided to ride the wave of their popularity by making a special dessert looking exactly like the Chinese plush toy.
Covered with white chocolate and filled with fruit mousse, the sweet treat is very popular among the visitors. Even though just one edible Labubu is the price of a full meal in this restaurant. A bite of the tart will cost you 4500 roubles (almost 60$).
As a bonus you will also get a high-quality replica of the toy for free.
“In the first two weeks there was a huge buzz. We had a lot of calls, maybe about a thousand calls a day”, the restaurant’s director Elizaveta Sazonova recalls.
Labubu was created a decade ago by Hong Kong artist and illustrator Kasing Lung. In 2019, Lung agreed to let them be sold by Pop Mart, a Chinese toy company that markets collectable figurines often sold in “blind boxes”.
A buyer of a blind box toy does not know exactly what design they will receive until they open the packaging. The starting price for Labubu blind box toys sold in Pop Mart’s stores is around 50 yuan (7$).
The character’s popularity skyrocketed after Lisa of the Korean pop music group Blackpink was spotted with one and expressed her admiration for the doll in interviews and online posts. Many celebrities followed. In May, British football star David Beckham shared a photo on Instagram of his Labubu attached to a bag.
