A two-alarm fire broke out in a single-family home in Winthrop on Saturday evening, according to the Winthrop Fire Department.
The Fire Department responded at about 7:18 p.m., as they were initially told that a person may have been inside the house.
Upon a search of the home, firefighters determined that the resident was not there, and the resident was later confirmed safe. NBC Boston reported that the person was out at the Red Sox game.
The home, located at 43 Trident Ave., was called a total loss, and one resident has been displaced.
No injuries were reported. Two firefighters were evaluated for heat exhaustion but did not need medical aid.
The fire department was understaffed, according to NBC Boston. Boston, Chelsea, Everett and Revere Fire Departments and Massport Fire Rescue provided mutual aid.
“Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of our Winthrop Fire crews and mutual aid partners, we were able to bring a dangerous fire under control before it could spread to neighboring homes,” said Fire Chief Scott Wiley, according to the press release. “I’m proud of their work tonight and grateful that no one was hurt. Thank you to all of our mutual aid partners for their prompt response.”
The house experienced a “pancake collapse,” Wiley told NBC Boston, meaning the second floor fell onto the first floor. The house was 150 years old with a wood frame.
The Winthrop Fire Department and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation unit are investigating the fire.
