AI cameras to be installed at state’s border check posts | Goa News – The Times of India

Panaji: Goa police on Thursday decided to install artificial intelligence (AI) based cameras at four border check posts in Goa to check the documents of vehicles entering the state to ensure hassle-free travel for tourists. Once the documents are checked, police will get details of those vehicles whose documents were verified when they stop for checking.
The AI-based cameras will verify documents, including vehicle registration, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, third-party insurance, driving licence, vehicle permit for interstate travel (for commercial vehicles), and other relevant documents.
The four check posts include Patradevi and Keri in North Goa and Pollem and Collem in South Goa.
A senior officer said that the AI-based cameras will be a one-point document check for all tourists’ vehicles and other commercial vehicles entering the state.
The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and boom barriers will be installed to establish border checkpoints across the state. The ANPR systems will be internet-enabled.
Each ANPR unit will be capable of reading and transmitting vehicle number plates from a distance of 5m to 10m, with vertical angulation ranging between 30° and 60°.
Additionally, the ANPR system will be supported by a local dashboard that can function in offline mode or via a local network at the checkpoint, ensuring uninterrupted operations even in the absence of internet connectivity.
The ANPR system will send a direct pass/fail (lift/not lift) signal to the boom barrier. Each lane shall be equipped with a pass/fail indicator for the vehicle at the boom barrier, which will be installed on the opposite side of the checkpoint and referenced by the state authorities.
“The new system will be introduced as there were complaints that police stopped tourists’ vehicles and harassed them. Once the AI cameras capture the number plate of a vehicle, it will verify the documents through e-VAHAN, SARTHI, and MoRTH data,” the officer said.
The officer said that once the documents are checked and the vehicle is allowed to enter the state, and in case police stop the vehicle, police will come to know that the documents of the vehicle were already checked and there is no need to verify again. “Police can stop a vehicle in case the vehicle is found in other traffic violations,” an officer said.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant is likely to launch the system by the end of this month.
